How do you guys decide when it's time to sell on the simulation app?

Beginner Investing

I've been practicing with virtual money on the NGX simulator for a couple of weeks now, and buying feels way easier than figuring out an exit plan. For example, I bought some PRESCO shares when they dipped slightly, but now I’m just staring at the portfolio screen wondering what signals actually tell you to take profit or cut losses. How do more experienced beginners usually set their rules for selling?

Omo, you are not alone o—buying is always sweet and straightforward, but that exit button can look heavy when you're just staring at the screen. What helped me on the simulator is setting a target in my head before I even click buy, like locking in a 10% gain or drawing a line at a 5% drop so emotion no go catch you. Since it's practice money, use it to test different rules—like trailing stops or selling half your units to secure profit while letting the rest ride—so you can see what fits your style before real cash is on the line.

Exit strategy formulation is arguably the hardest part of portfolio management, especially in a T+X settlement environment where liquidity shifts rapidly across NGX sectors. Rather than staring at the portfolio screen hoping for a psychological cue, try anchoring your sells to predefined quantitative metrics, such as a trailing stop-loss based on average true range or a strict risk-to-reward ratio determined before you even enter the trade. Since this is a simulation, use the sandbox environment to test whether your thesis for buying PRESCO—whether it was agricultural commodity price trends or volume accumulation—has fundamentally broken down, rather than reacting purely to short-term price fluctuations.

Ah, I am so glad you asked this because I’ve been staring at my own portfolio screen with the exact same confusion! Buying feels exciting, but knowing when to click sell without panicking or selling too early feels like the hardest part of this simulation. How are people deciding on percentages for taking profit or cutting losses without second-guessing every single move?
