How to calculate stock gain or loss percentage in Nigeria

Beginner Investing

Knowing how to calculate stock gain or loss percentage helps you see if your shares on the Nigerian Exchange are making money.

In simple words: You find out your percentage gain or loss by comparing the money you made or lost against the original price you paid for the shares. It is just like checking if your profit from selling plantain at the market is small or big.

For example: If you buy shares for 100 Naira and sell them for 120 Naira, your gain is 20 Naira. Divide that 20 Naira by your starting 100 Naira, and you get 20 percent.

Remember:

  • Always start with the money you first used to buy the shares.
  • A gain means your investment grew, while a loss means it dropped.
  • You can use this math on any company on the NGX.

Try it on StocktoWealth: Open your practice account and check your virtual profit on CADBURY to see how it works.

Welcome, my students, let us take this math very slowly so it becomes easy for everyone. To find your gain or loss percentage, you take the money you made or lost and divide it by the original price you paid for the shares. Finally, you multiply that answer by one hundred to get your exact percentage. Practice this simple formula on your virtual dashboard today to see how your learning is progressing.
