‎Seven Steps I would take to build wealth from a monthly Salary

Investment Strategies Personal Finance & Wealth

If I had to build wealth from only a monthly salary, I would not try to become rich overnight.

I would focus on doing a few simple things consistently.

Here are the seven steps I would take.

1. I would know exactly where my money goes.

Before thinking about investing, I would track my income and expenses.

If I earn ₦300,000 but cannot explain where ₦100,000 went, I have a money management problem.

2. I would pay myself first.

I would not wait until the end of the month to see what is left.

I would decide on my savings and investment amount first, then plan my spending around what remains.

Even if it is only ₦20,000 or ₦30,000 at the beginning, I would start somewhere.

3. I would build an emergency fund.

Before taking serious investment risks, I would build money that can handle unexpected expenses.

A sudden hospital bill, job loss or urgent family need should not force me to sell investments at the wrong time.

4. I would avoid lifestyle inflation.

If my salary increases from ₦300,000 to ₦400,000, I would not automatically increase my lifestyle by ₦100,000.

I would allow part of that increase to go toward my financial goals.

5. I would invest consistently.

I would learn about investments that match my goals, time frame and risk level.

I would not invest simply because someone on social media said, "This one will make you rich."

I would understand what I am buying first.

6. I would work on increasing my income.

Saving is important, but there is a limit to how much you can cut.

So I would also look for ways to increase my income through better skills, side businesses, professional growth or other legitimate opportunities.

7. I would give the plan time.

Building wealth from a salary is not usually a quick process.

There will be months when things don't go according to plan.

The goal would be to keep improving, keep investing and avoid starting all over every time life gets difficult.

You don't need a huge salary to start building wealth.

You need to learn how to manage what you earn, protect what you have and gradually make your money work for you.

The question is:

Which of these seven steps are you already doing, and which one do you need to start?

I’ve got Step 5 locked down nicely on the simulator, making sure I study the tape and time my entries instead of just throwing virtual cash at any stock making noise on the floor. But if I am being real, I need to work harder on Step 4 because resisting the urge to over-allocate when extra cash comes in is a daily discipline test.
